i got off of spotify at the end of last month so i've kinda just been listening to anything these days. i'm thinking of getting an mp3 player again and just torrenting my whole library again, but that's sort of a long-term plan rn... even before i cancelled my subscription i was kinda starting to enter one of my passionless disengagement with music phases so i've been making due just fine with my stopgap solutions for now, one of which is listening to whatever dj set shows up on various platforms i'm on.

i've also been listening to a lot of nts radio especially when there isn't anything in particular out of my own library that i want to listen to and i just want noise, or filtering by their genre/mood tags when i just want a vibe but i'm not picky about the actual songs. some of them are mixes but a lot of the time it's also mixtapes where the tracks just play in sequence or radio style where the host speaks a little in between songs.

but mostly sets just show up on my youtube home page or occasionally i seek them out myself. recent highlights under the cut.

genuinely got jealous of everyone posting dreamwidth posts so now i'm finishing this thing, which is a response to fwcu's post that doesn't exist and also i basically feel like this about doing it at all:

like i'm basically operating from the starting point of every ship is switching at a more or less 50/50 ratio by default for a variety of reasons: i like sexual exploration and experimentation so it makes me happy when my ship is doing that, whose dick is going in whose hole isn't the end all be all or even primary mode through which i conceive of my ships, i tend to take more of a characterological view of sex and relationship dynamix than a symbological one, i'm biased and i can't imagine never ever wanting to try a different position, i'm greedy and want my oshi to experience every form of pleasure possible, it's beautiful and romantic to me for my ship to want to see every side of each other, probably more reasons i can't think of right now but i've likely made myself sufficiently clear at this point. that said, i don't live in my ideal world where every character is a perfect switch so despite being able to, for the most part, find enjoyment in any order there are ships where i do have a slight preference for one order over the other even if i do want them to switch. some additional disclaimers apply but i won't be disclaiming them because i don't feel like it. just read my mind.

kind of the gold standard for fmvs, everything about it is so clean... especially the way it uses text but keeps it simple + incorporates source dialogue and sound to punctuate the points it's trying to make. the sound effects on beat in the b part of the verse is such a cool trick and i fall for it every time. and it loops seamlessly! also this is my sacred text for geto characterization, it tells you everything you need to know about him in 54 seconds.

1-800-I-LOVE-PANELS!!!!!!!! see, this is also a good counterpoint to the previous fmv because i don't think the type was at all necessary here (although it's basically unobtrusive and fine, so). what makes this fmv so good though is matching the angstiness of the song with the visuals and kind of twisting the super nostalgic shots in a really fucked up gutpunching way. it conveys all the anger and anguish of a break up and just really drives home the FUCK MY LIFE feeling of being in getogojo's situation. i really like that last cut in particular, geto and gojo with a gap between them leaving a small panel of gojo looking up, vaguely bemused and crestfallen.

i've linked this one before and it's still so goated i have to shout it out one more time. obviously a lot of the work is already in the original stippling mv/enstars mv engine but it's so simple and effective to use the exact two moments when one character is hidden behind the other's body to switch out the outfits. and although the choice in outfits is also obvious, sometimes the whole point of an fmv is to reinforce in short form a narrative that fans already know and have meaning attached to.

i don't even ship figafau but this one is playing all the hits: beautiful illustrations to represent a non-visual medium, source dialogue that contrasts with the imagery in a meaningful way, obviously affecting nostalgiabait song... one thing i do wish this fmv did do better is making the unvoiced text clearer because it's really important to conveying the relationship but it's so small and fleeting and pales in comparison to the voiced dialogue, so it falls a little flat.

instantly iconic. i love how the tone of the source material is in a completely different world from the song but op makes it work by drawing connections between the lyrics and the scenes. it's funny, but it's also good!

this is so fucking coolllllll holy shitttt omgg like just ridiculously impressive how much effort and technical precision went into this and such a beautiful way to show off an actor's range and career.

nostalgia | excalibur: hype moments and aura

okay this one maybe borderline doesn't deserve to be here, but i do actually watch it quite frequently and i think i find it so effective because it meets the principle of having a clear motion in every clip. in particular the second and third clip where it's the woman dancing and then the crowd kneeling is a sequence that just scratches my brain in the most satisfying way.

i had to briefly crash out over finding out this has been set to a taylor swift song the whole time and i never even realized it, and i'm literally so mortified because this fmv is like sooooo soulcrushingly devastating and makes me burst into tears genuinely every single time i watch it and it was a taylor swift song this whole time FUCKKKKKK. but that said, the height of the argument cut to the montage of every moment of intimacy sydcarmy have ever had to the music cutting out on "how could you say that?" could make me throw up from the strength of the emotion it induces in me.

i didn't realize i've passed the one year mark on my fmv repository thread on discord, so as a belated celebration here are some of my favorites.

(annoying gripe disclaimer/caveat: i see a lot of really excellent fmvs on twitter, either originally posted there or reposts from tiktok which i don't use and is incredibly hostile to engage with without an account, and either way both platforms have the same problem of forcing script embeds rather than iframe embeds so they won't be on this post 😔 mainly because i don't want to mix embeds and links so there will be a followup post for twitter links laterrrr 😒)

this one technically predates my thread but is the first post because it's my GOATTTTTTT. truly thee definitive charamu manifesto, like maybe it's because i'm not serious about being a charamu shipper but i genuinely can't imagine shipping charamu without this video-- it just does a massively better job at telling the charamu story than the source text itself, to the point that having seen this video so many times before i actually watched cca i was shocked at how unserious and goofy cca felt in comparison because netube makes it seem so fucking devastating. literally every second, every juxtaposition of every line of dialogue and visual, is so masterful it blows me away every time. the way op reorganizes moments across the chronology of the show to fully mythologize char and amuro (e.g. "it's just the stage that has come to you" initially said by amuro to char in zeta over a visual of amuro uncovering the gundam for the first time) and thematically recontextualizes seemingly innocuous scenes (e.g. char and amuro's first meeting in 0079 where char, with mud on his knees, says, "it would by nice if i was the only one who got dirty" now taken to mean char's self-sacrifice that cost both him and amuro their lives; they both had to get dirty) is sooooooo ahhhhhhhhhh 🤯 my other favorite moment that smashes several barrels over my head killing me instantly every time is supercut that starts with beltorchika asking, "who is the man in the sunglasses?" and goes through all of char's various identities and the way the people who knew him define him (the red comet, nii-san, quattro-taii, taisa, CHAR) then culminating in char's own "i am--" statement followed immediately by the continuation of his and amuro's conversation post-dakar that was placed earlier in the video: "am i to be the sacrifice?" ABSOLUTE CINEMA.

a lot of fmvs focus on being a music video first and foremost, understandably, but i really love how this video uses the instrumental backing track for rhythm and pacing but lets puzzle piecing the dialogue take center stage, which i'd love to see even a little more of in other fmvs!

this may be the best i've ever seen a mmd look, i'm guessing the models are from the jjba video games so they obviously look really professional but even the motion looks so clean and well-timed it rivals enstars' mocapped dance animation.

op is a little but unserious for these lq clips with the nozomi logo on them :weibolaughcry: especially on what is actually a really good fmv in terms of song choice and matching the visuals to the music, like i was really gagged at how well the song fit.

yass grenade!! not my absolute favorite use of this kind of panel overlay technique but it is the one that's available to me right now and i do still rewatch this one relatively often because it's so short and satisfying.

initially found this guy through their escaflowne fmv which i also love and rewatch all the time (+ honorable mention to the gunbuster one as well), but i want to highlight this one specifically because i watched it so many times and was so compelled by it that it was maybe singlehandedly the thing that got me comfortable with the prospect of watching the eva rebuilds just to see how all of the decontextualized visuals played out in an actual story... and you know what... amv cenit did it better, if only because it takes far less time to watch jagdmeister end+spiel than it does to watch eva 4.0. obviously this is not really the time nor place for me to unpack my rebuilds review and i will say i don't think end+spiel, because of its framing and focus, can necessarily capture the real high highs of 4.0 (village-3) or even address what i think is the actual point of 4.0 (no more evas), but it does do a much better job of using all the spectacular imagery in a more evocative way because the story it alludes to for why any of these giant robot fights are happening is more interesting than the justifications we actually got.

it's like poetry, it rhymes... well, it does get less good after the obviously really good every_slap/punch/hit_of_zeta_gundam.mp4 into every slap/punch/hit of every other gundam intro, but i still smiled seeing every launch sequence and every beam rifle and every newtype space.

LET'S ALL KILL OURSELVESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS 😭😭😭😭😭😭 immediately canonized this as a sacred text as soon as i clocked the transition from kaonana→rei to fukirei with the swelling "it's just that i fell in love with a WARRRR AND NOBODY TOLD ME IT ENDED" lyric, like oh my god... the material is so readily apparent in both the canon and the song but of course it's still so well put together. aggghhhhh my poor meow meowww 😭😭😭😭😭

it's weirdly so hard to articulate what's so good about this fmv because it's kinda self-evidently so visually striking the way graphic design is op's passion... and like, well, guy who enjoys stories about sex and sexuality right here, it's just thematic material that is going to appeal to me no matter what maybe.

gundam gquuuuuux midseason review

as of yesterday, we're halfway through gqx so here are my impressions of everything so far.

story & pacing
on the one hand, i was more or less primed to enjoy gqx simply on the basis of it being alt-uc and especially something that wasn't more oyw side story. i've been begging for more zeta era ovas and although this is not exactly that, i think the combo of zeon wins the war au + set in 0085 is really fresh and exciting. my preemptive enjoyment was tempered/complicated by a couple of things: [1] i don't really care for gundam fight club as a premise and was kinda already hoping that wouldn't be the whole show from watching the initial trailers, [2] i didn't get to see the theatrical release, which lead to a lot of anguish until i was able to catch up, and [3] only 12 episodes why why why why why.

to get the episode count issue out of the way first, i basically made peace with it by episode 4. the pacing isn't perfect, but i feel like gqx is making pretty effective use of the time it has and is telling a self-contained story. 08th ms team told a satisfying story in 11 episodes with one to spare for omake, so it's less a question of runtime and more a question of writing. and the writing is good! but then i'll want more of the story and i have no faith in sunrise that i will ever get any. (and no, manga spinoffs and mobage expansions do not count!)

anyway, i think the whole theatrical release split into three episodes thing was very questionable. there were kind of no right answers, and i think the way i ended up seeing it was... fine... the extra 10 minutes of episode 2 that they cut notwithstanding... and maybe i'll feel differently with the complete story in hindsight but my pervasive feeling through the first three episodes is it was a quarter of the whole show on just setup when that could have been a feature length first episode and extra time for more story. i mean, even now after three more episodes, i'm like it was fine, the slow setup was worth it, plot started to move faster after that so i can't really complain, i'm just saying that i'm not retracting my complaints at the time because they still feel emotionally valid.

i'm intrigued by where the plot is going next since it looks like clan battle is wrapping up and we're pivoting to zeon civil war. episode 6 in particular, while i enjoyed it a lot, did feel very disjointed since it had a lot of moving parts to slot into place and kinda had to sideline the main trio to do it, so it'll really be a question of how well machu's story meshes with the larger scale politics plot. already gqx is doing a better job at this than gwitch did since machu is actively participating in clan battle and clearly willing to go off piste for her own aims in a way that will interfere with the sodon plot. but...

themes & cameos
hard to say just yet-- machu's (and by extension shuji's and nyaan's) story is very clearly about coming of age, self-identity and compromises thereof, "normality" vs... whatever else, the post-modern teenage condition. everything else is kinda looking like playing around in the uc sandbox. so far, both halves work independently of each other, how they converge remains to be seen. even if it just goes on like this, i might still rate it as one of the better gundam installments though, just with the caveat that it never amounted to more than the sum of its parts.

the cameos i thought were pretty tasteful at first, and hearing that it was going to be challia bull and cameron bloom of all people was very funny and hype. since it's a zeon wins au, i obviously want to see garma so fucking badly but i wouldn't feel good about him being shoehorned in, and that's kinda been my stance on all of my other uc favorites, especially the ones who have even less business being in side 6 or involved in the military at all. so far, i don't think any of the cameos have been egregious either but again it'll be delicate to balance between exploring what existing characters are doing in this timeline and giving space to the new characters' whose show it is.

gwitch comparisons, visuals/music/etc.
apparently both gwitch and gqx (and seed freedom, and possibly some other yet unreleased stuff) started development at the same time (2018), so it seems less like gqx was an outright response to gwitch and more like sunrise had the concept "modern gundam with a female protagonist" plus maybe the duels/fight club thing and had two separate teams run with that. beyond those two statements, gwitch and gqx don't have anything in common, but i do want to talk about the duels/fight club element and the overall pacing/story composition/etc of both shows.

the big thing for me is that a lot of the things i found sloppy about gwitch (tightness of the story, protagonist agency and relevance to overarching plot, worldbuilding, tone and contending with the seriousness of the stakes) gqx is frankly leagues better at. again, it's not really a matter of how many episodes, it's that gwitch could not focus on the story it wanted to tell and telling it well. (although i will concede that more episodes are conducive to more time spent on worldbuilding, and that gqx doesn't have to do as much, but... while gqx can rely on a lot of background knowledge from viewers who have seen uc stuff, it's still an alternate timeline and needs to convey that, AND gqx goes out of its way to give a lot of detail about life in izuma colony from the metro maps to the multilingual signage everywhere to machu and nyaan's school uniforms and that's what makes it good.) that said, though, gwitch did have a lot going for it-- i wasn't excited for it being school setting but thematically that has a lot of heft to it: school is the site where adults inculcate adult rules of engagement in young people, the duels are a way of playing at warfare before the kids graduate from nepobaby war criminal school and go on to participate in the real thing, it has all the generational divide stuff that is so core to gundam built into the setting itself. again, it failed to engage with those stakes seriously, but at least in theory that reads a little better to me than gqx's gundam fight club because uhhh crime's gonna crime, i guess? i'm being somewhat uncharitable because clan battle doesn't do much for me personally, but the gripe is still fair, i think.

oh, also, on the topic of "modern gundam", a lot of the press around gwitch talked up how they wanted to appeal to younger/new viewers but gwitch still feels very... not timeless, but just kinda default anime of current year. on the other hand, gqx very much feels like 2025 in a lot of ways. the character designs, the music, the way the teenage characters talk (miorine gets this a little bit but not really anyone else iirc) and dress and feel about their place in the world-- well, i'm not a teenager so maybe it's actually way off the mark and cringe, but it seems to be pretty resonant.

characters, ships, mobile suits, anything else
well, i like everyone a normal amount. and shuji a slightly more than normal amount because he is so sexy, DAMN.

machu is interesting as a protagonist, especially because they let her be a little ugly emotionally in episode 6, but i don't necessarily feel strongly about her yet myself. i'd still like to see more interiority for shuji now that nyaan got her big highlight moment in episode 5, he's the one who seems the least psychologically realized out of the main trio. and then sodonz are just funny guys to me.

speaking of the main trio, i like all three of them together in a vaguely gen narrativeshipping way but also in a shippy way sometimes. i love the subtle alternating lopsidedness they have going on and the way each leg of two points of the triangle have their own connection individually that then brushes up against the dynamic of the trio as a group. out of the three possible ships, shujimachu is the one that speaks to me most as a Ship but i'm pretty picky about it (i.e. i'm not finding them too boygirlcoded in the show but when the fanart starts leaning that way, i'm out) and it's still really contingent on the trio. machunyaan definitely feels yuribaity in a good way even though i don't think it'll end up being properly endgame canon. and shujinyaan feel the least Shippy to me but i'm definitely enjoying their budding freaky mavship. i'm still shopping around for a boy top for shuji though, but the pickings don't look promising.

i don't have super strong feelings about either of the gundams' designs. seeing grandpa looking like that was a little jarring at first, but i don't viscerally hate it. the combat we do see is pretty fun, especially the aforementioned shujinyaan freaky mavship, although every time they try to go back to oyw era i'm kinda like [mike's mic voice] it's not realistic. not a huge dealbreaker, though.

and that's about it for 6 episodes. i'm excited to see what's next; i have absolutely no predictions at this point.

My favorites are Nishi and Garuma from Char's Daily Life, any of the Garma Lives alternate futures from Gihren's Greed, and now their GQuuuuuux incarnations too, but by all means bring in whatever's going on in the OL Haman universe or if you consider The Origin (or for that matter Thunderbolt) a sufficiently distinct timeline. Even just the subtle difference in their dynamic between their time at the military academy and post the invasion of Earth is great.

Time travel and alternate universes aside, here are some freeforms for exploring their dynamic as I see it. There's the tension of Char's murderous revenge quest against the Zabis vs his genuine affection for and friendship with Garma. Garma also outranks Char and we see later in the UC timeline that Char tends not to like being put in positions of power, but at the same time he always seems to have the upper hand and has a way of pulling Garma's strings. Char's politics are wildly inconsistent and we don't see much of Garma's in canon, but in the vein of porn as character study, here's an avenue for porn as worldbuilding.

Also, while not specifically requested, I'm totally cool with kinking on infidelity with regards to Garma's canonical relationship with Icelina. Internalized homophobia and closetry are a plus here, too.

my youtube shorts addiction is kind of hitting unreasonable highs lately, which means i've been watching a lot of those new school tiktok style edits that are just like 5 frames cycled through with ppt transition animations, and basically i wanted to complain a little about how i don't fuck with this trend... but also i'm not doing a retvrn thing either because (a) sometimes these new tiktok edits do hit, and (b) i find a lot of old school amvs boring too. so ultimately this is just a case of sturgeon's law persisting across decades and trends.

first off, an example of the thing i'm complaining about. it's not all bad, there's one genuinely really cool transition (the card throwing cut to the manga panel on the card into the anime version of the manga panel) but it's just the repetition that bothers me when it could have been a single run through with a shorter excerpt of the song or kept the audio the same length and used more footage. i know a lot of people do manga mvs too but i'm surprised this kind of manga-anime adaptation transition isn't more common, i think it could get a lot of mileage and i'd love to see more of it.

this one is pretty similar to the base tiktok edit style without too many flashy transitions (and if it had to have flashy transitions at all, i think a more experienced editor could do more with the lock/chains imagery), but what i like about it is that it doesn't repeat any clips/frames and actually conveys a narrative. only thing is i wish the song choice was more appealing because then it would really be my princess's perfect slaycam.

now THIS is an amv. it's a combo of fun song, good timing, masterful sound editing and clipping, and taking advantage of a lot of the animation techniques and storyboarding from the original footage to create a super satisfying sense of movement and rhythm. plus there's an entertaining minigame of trying to identify as many anime as you can.

two for the price of one machinima special! i think i'm realizing how much i love machinima as a medium and maybe i'm just not in video game fandoms enough to appreciate it (although this natsumugi will always be famous to me, but i still think the enstars mv engine is criminally underutilized) because as cool as these are to watch, op posting their behind the scenes/process videos is what really made me go "that's awesome" out loud.

and of course mmds are sort of machinima's sibling, but my feeling about them is that they're both so much harder to make and so much harder to make look good given the available resources. but well, this video just has cocomelonesque properties to me.

how is this an animatic meme from 2 years ago and i haven't seen it replicated with every character under the sun? not that i'm complaining about kyoufuu allback because i thought that one was cute and the song was catchy so i did watch every single one, but yona yona dance deserved her clout too! anyway kyundo severely graphic design mogged the original mv even because every single tiny creative liberty was so striking and captivating and i fucking love beautiful colors and shapes so bad.

this one isn't really an amv so much as a sakuga showcase, but i think it still achieves something a lot of amvs fail to which is matching the music to the vibe while maintaining the entire purpose of the video, leaving the cuts intact.

yes, i'm somehow procrastinating so hard on the hanahaki post that i'm taking another stab at rehabilitating omegaverse.

cringe and flop methodology fail

this all came together after we jokingly spitballed a few ideas about how one could construct a portable speculative setting to cater to or prioritize kinks that traditional omegaverse fails to at fujo symposium and i said i'd post a bracket of some alternative animal mating habits later. primarily this involved me googling "weird animal reproduction" and clicking through some listicles and picking out 8 candidates i thought could be appealing, so yes, this is already somewhat filtered through my own preferences and my apologies go to all the pissplay enthusiasts who were not represented. while dreamseller noted during fujo symposium that "hybrid fic is only based if it's not mammalian," i didn't intentionally limit myself to non-mammalian species but i did also find that statement to be true after researching.

the crude summarization process after collecting the eight samples involved condensing the mating habits of each animal into a roughly single sentence dynamic, swapping "male" and "female" to "alpha" and "omega" respectively where the animals weren't already being referred to as "alpha male" and "beta male" in particular. i didn't really try to include a beta role if there wasn't one already, and even in some cases like the ruff or side-blotched lizards, i didn't disambiguate the alpha (read: male) trinary into their own roles (beta, sigma...?).

clownfish: alphas fight their way up a strict hierarchy of size and aggression to become omegas who then let the second strongest guy fuck them	sea slugs: one guy brainwashing another guy into becoming an omega

also, i didn't think to do any sort of seeding, so the initial matchups were semi-randomly decided. and i don't know how a double-elimination tournament works, and at this point i'm too afraid to ask.

the first round received 15 votes on all matchups, with the exception of manakin vs seahorse, which received 14. the second and third rounds received 18 and 12 votes respectively. i also voted myself in all rounds.

i won't be including granular breakdowns of the votes here because almost every matchup was a blowout; the only ones that were competitive were clownfish vs sea slug in the first round with a 53% to 47% margin and clownfish vs flatworm in the second round with a 56% to 44% margin.

voting was for the most part anonymous, but some participants chose to partially de-anonymize themselves via additional conversations during and after the voting period.

the international implications of clownfishfuck reverseworld

okay... ngl these results did disappoint me a little bit. i felt like the voting swayed very conservative, avoiding anything with more heavily implied supernatural/xeno elements (seahorse, praying mantis) or complex social structures (ruff, side-blotched lizard). i can understand the appeal of "battle-based erotic systems" (clownfish, flatworm) but nobody was able to provide a compelling case for manakin making the final round besides being up against more unpopular options every time.

i think, admittedly, a lot of these issues did stem from my failure to summarize/translate adequately, but at the same time points to a clear rigidity of thinking in the participants. my bad for being surprised that most people do basically enjoy traditional omegaverse and will at most entertain one or two subversive elements. this also suggests that seahorse should have gotten a better shake, since it's a more or less direct reversal of the traditional omegaverse dynamic with the omega topping/breeding the alpha, but i guess oviposition is scary. i get that, i was there once.

sea slug also had strong odds but ultimately lost to the eventual victor. i'm not sure if it would have fared better or worse if i had played up the hypnosis and externally induced transformation aspects more in the summary. to me, the psychological horror is part of the appeal, as well as the universal threat of omegafication. in a way, sea slug could also be considered a battle-based erotic system along with clownfish and flatworm but brings in more dom/sub dynamics in favor of physical strength.

personally, my approach to a new omegaverse would be something along the lines of ruff/side-blotched lizard. expanding from a binary alpha/omega classes (i'm excluding betas because really no one gives a fuck about betas or does anything interesting with them anyway) to quaternary classes brings a lot of variety and potentially tensionful dynamix to the table. despite them both being somewhat similar setups, i think ruff in particular wins out for swapping the superfluous pseudo-beta/blue side-blotched lizard for the satellite alpha, who is essentially a beta "dole-bludging on territorial's dime for practicality" (duriandog, 😺🎣 (2023)), as well as expanding the yellow side-blotched lizard's role from simply genderfaking/sneek-breeding to actively being available to any other class in any role (top or bottom) as the faeder. however, this is only appealing to those who are not monoshippers/otp purists, and the simultaneous loss/exclusion of a monogamous relationship with the ruff and excess, unwanted complications that come with the side-blotched lizard would be deterrents.

i don't feel much need to comment on clownfish or flatworm, as their appeal seems to be self-evident, aside from saying that emphasizing the flatworm's (or even clownfish's) duels as potentially being swordfights, tennis matches, motor races, etc., rather than purely physical combat speaks to the variety of aesthetic flavor possible beyond the otherwise simple premise.

in conclusion, they all look nice. i see no need to restrict ourselves to a single omegaverse, and in fact, the elementary act of conceptualizing alternative fictional worlds is in itself a revolutionary step towards dismantling the hegemony of traditional omegaverse. let 1000 naturefuck hybridworlds bloom, let's all try something difference.

more bottoms than tops? mediated sexual roles and masculinity assemblage in chinese gay communites - really interesting ethnography that tries to answer the question of whether there are in fact more bottoms than tops but very quickly dismisses the premise as something that's not statistically viable to calculate then goes onto explain why that is and touch on the complicated dynamix of identifying as a 1 or a 0. really fascinating stuff about gay identity and gender roles and i appreciated seeing it all laid out, but at the same time i did joke on twitter that me and my friends also spent 2017 to 2021 reaching the same conclusions thru fujoshi symposia.
top or bottom: how do we desire? - companion piece to the above cf. duriandog, which i immediately felt much more uncharitable towards for taking "there are more bottoms than tops" as a given when i had JUST read about how there was no way to effectively prove that and for generally being so heavy on the pretentious blowhardery and jargonistic bloviating when the paper i'd just read was so much more accessible and straightforward without sacrificing complexity. (sorry duriandog i still appreciated the rec a lot!!!) there were maybe two points or like two halves of one whole point that i found salient here, which is essentially the line "it's not a top shortage, it's a brute shortage." and i do think there is something to the collective disavowal of the "top" identity reflecting anxieties surrounding desire and moral agency, and that's something the paper didn't really touch on. plus there was stuff about "top" and "bottom" being racialized categories, like... sure peggle.

halfway through nona the ninth and picking thru Other People's Opinions to keep me going, there's probably a lot i could say about the way the necromancer/cavalier roles get expanded but i don't have the energy for that so here's me sketching out some kind of enstars locked tomb au but not really because i'm kind of making up the necromancer/cavalier dynamix i want to see in my mind

- adam and eve have very obvious necro/cav pairs but also hiyori and nagisa both want to be each other's cavaliers a little bit
- tori/yuzuru is also obvious and then wataei are like technically necro/cav but they're on so many layers of perverse double triple role swap fantasy and eichi being such a flop cringe cavalier that they're functionally not necro/cav in any way that's like useful
- tsukasa/leo/izumi have the two necromancers sharing a cavalier thing, which leaves ritsunaru as a tidy necro/cav pair
- rei is a cavalierless necromancer... maybe keito could be his but idk kurokei seem to already have the one flesh one end thing going on, and in general undead is giving boe/non-house/guys who are not Part Of The System
- obviously all of the oddballs should be necromancers so you get a few other easy pairs: natsumugi, shumika, kanachia; kind of lol @ tsumugi's cav4cav romantic aspirations w/ eichi i guess... and sora is another necromancer getting left out :^(
- ex-fine also had hiyoei + nagitsumu as necro/cav pairs although ofc never consummated
- 2wink are 2wink ofc
- himeru already soulvored kaname and is secretly a lyctor among normies but maybe rinne is also a necromancer... hiiro was supposed to be his cavalier but rinne couldn't go through with it

fandom state of affairs 2023

looking back on last year's post, i feel like i've just been accelerating the rehabilitation and revitalization to almost absurd degrees in 2022— it's been all new stuff and more and faster and nonstop, for good or for ill. i did develop many debilitatingly gripless behaviors last year either as a result or just comorbid with the accelerationism, but i am feeling like i'm on the upslope of wellness so that's all mostly contained to last year.

other lessons learned: i actually thought of some superlatives for an end of year fandom meme of my own since i wanted to do one last year... but (1) it did induce a little bit of existential crisis in me because i don't think the categories i came up with really represented my values, and (2) god i have an awful memory and i really need to be better at documenting things somewhere other than twitter, which incidentally would solve my first problem too.

snowflake_challenge's prompts this year do look pretty good though, so maybe i'll try to use those as effortpost prompts throughout 2023.

after shamefully reading several million words of fanfiction and finishing zero (0) "real" "books" in all of 2022, i magically have gotten back on the wagon this week with MILK FED by MELISSA BRODER. this was not really a rec so much as a book my sister was reading last year and chatting with me about and made sound super enticing yet not enticing enough to not wait a year to actually read it.

anyway, that initial conversation solidified it in my mind as "eating disorder mommy kink romance" and i had meant it facetiously at the time because i thought it was going to be mostly like psychosexual introspection and subtext not real lesbiana sexxx, and like it was 50% psychosexual introspection but it was also 50% explicitly horny lesbianism (well, bisexuality to be clear but it was absolutely way more invested in all of the women relationships, romantic/sexual or otherwise) which was a very pleasant surprise. i mean, "eating disorder mommy kink romance" is still a flippant description that undersells this book sort of the same way "lesbian necromancers in space" does for gt9 and on top of that i would have said "jewish eating disorder mommy kink romance" if i'd known at the time how prominent the judaism themes and motifs were going to be.

the other point of note is that this book really felt like fanfic, and i 100% mean that as a compliment— sort of stream of consciousness narration, short chapters that functioned as mostly self-contained sequential scenes in service of the overall idea, plot that was closely focused on a single character's interiority punctuated by very personal scope interpersonal conflicts, emphasis on sexuality and eroticism in a way that felt cohesive with the narrative + the back half of the book being mostly sex scenes felt soooooo fanficcy lol. i think there are definitely fic authors who could be playing much more to their strengths writing something like this that i would enjoy reading an indefinite amount of, tbh.

overall, really enjoyed and would definitely recommend as an easy quick read. despite the topics seeming pretty heavy, they're treated thoughtfully but not too heavyhanded or angsty; it's largely a quite healing narrative, even.

i also started reading nona the ninth shortly afterwards. updates to follow, but so far so good for my reading habit.

fic rec friday: outsider pov

one thing about me is i love REPORTING LIVE FROM OTHER PEOPLE'S BUSINESS. i think i used to be slightly prejudiced against outsider pov because i was like "i'm here to read about myyyyy ship, why the fuck is this other guy here" but i've realized in time that (1) i actually love characters gossiping about each other and (2) it's actually extremely affirming when my ship is SO in love that other people can't help but notice and be invested in and (3) even when it's not My Ship™ i suppose this is the tinhatter instinct within me coming out.

i think my favorite form of outsider pov is when the outsider is a named/canon character who is also having their own narrative arc in the fic and the couple that they're outside of are functioning as a kind of framing device for that, it's kinda like the bogo of storytelling i guess. both of my recs are the former, but i also would enjoy mob characters speculating on my ship's realness and truth etc, which especially works in canons about famous people and i can't help being an idols fan.

usually what i don't like is when the outsider likes one half of the couple, but i'm willing to grant exceptions to that if it's done well or leans more pre-threesome than ntr.

hell dorm | enstars: rei/eichi + aira

i kinda feel like this fic is only like 50% actually good and 50% my fuckworkitis roulette finding literally anything in the world to fixate on, but i did enjoy it for the basically the reasons i mentioned plus a few other factors that really make this work as enstars fic. imo there's some extraneous stuff but it's really good at relying on a lot of the history and sense that other things are happening outside the narrow scope of this particular story.

we revisited some discussion topics from noncon symposium a couple weeks ago, so i figured this would be a good opportunity to do what these posts somehow turned into which is tracking super localized microtrends in my social circle. to review my stance on noncon, i'm not particularly into it qua noncon for whatever reason it will just leave me totally flaccid even when dubcon fic from the same authors will have me rock hard, so there are only really rare and niche situations/characters/ships where i'm actually seeking out noncon specifically or when i'll come across noncon i wasn't looking for that hits right.

shout out to oomf in law... i don't specifically feel this way about kohaku but i can appreciate having one character who is your #1 object of See Them Nonconned. i still don't think the sex was doing anything for me but i really liked the framing of all the obvious red flags and walking into a stupid situation and peak poor meow meow vibes, and even though it was tagged hurt/no comfort i found the ending with kohaku just passing out and then crying into the phone to madara really cathartic and it still left the door open to imagine comfort/revenge.

the other thing i've been reading recently is this social media au which i obviously think is the most lowbrow form of media and am battling my internalized elitism about. as much as i rag on stuff like this, i have to reluctantly admit that there is value in getting an easy laugh out of something that's out of character but still rings emotionally true, or cry or squee or whatever the emotion is. it's like craving sweets, it's not the only thing you can or should it but it satisfies some base desire and sometimes the sweets are corner store candy and sometimes it's dessert at a nice restaurant-- i think this analogy is really cliche at this point but it still works. anyway, it's one of those fanwork formats that is actually somewhat difficult to pull off at a high level, you're rarely ever getting the michelin star dessert end of the spectrum here, but that's still......... fine. in moderation.

i know i just went off in defense of the social media au, but even suspending disbelief re: the whole premise, there are some characterization choices that are so grating here mainly because it's like parodying a type of person i find really obnoxious on the actual internet where i hang out who i feel like don't even deserve the dignity of being affectionately poked fun at. that said though, there are some good jokes that pay off deep into part 2 and in general the pacing/management of all the concurrent plotlines is well done.

this week's thefridayfave is music themed so i finally have five questions i can and want to actually answer plus i can do a mini listening update for this quarter.

1. What is the last song/bit of music you heard?
just finished playing emerald planet on enstars 👍

2. What is the song you can't get enough of right now?
girls by aespa, i liked it well enough when i first heard it but lately i've been queueing it after every other song.

i feel like my spot of eye stats are always skewed as hell, but here are some other hits from the past month or so:

3. What song/band did you just discover and think are great?
ada rook, i've only listened to UGLY DEATH NO REDEMPTION ANGEL CURSE I LOVE YOU which is perfect soothing irradiated beats to me so i'll probably listen to some of her other albums soon. i remember checking out the most recent black dresses album before they disbanded and i wasn't really vibing with it, but ada rook's solo stuff seems more up my alley i think.

4. Do you listen to the same song over and over on repeat? Why?
often, usually because there's a specific sound or melodic line or something that just feels really good on my brain so i want to keep hearing it

5. Do you make music, or do you want to?
i do want to but i'm kind of intimidated to start, i know i should just download ableton and fuck around but aaaaahhhhhh
